Welcome!
I’m so glad that you found my page. Finding the best fit for a therapist can feel exhausting. I’d imagine this isn’t the first page you’ve read through, so I’ll keep it pretty simple here – I’ll give an overview about who I work best with then share more about my approach to therapy.
I specialize in working with young adults and men who feel stuck – in relationships, careers, life-purpose, addictive patterns, or spirituality. I’m deeply drawn to exploring individual meaning and values in our lives. In fact, this is why I got into the field in the first place.
I want you to be able to walk away from sessions with tangible skills, while also tending to the deeper work to heal what caused your hurts in the first place. Some of our sessions will be focused on learning these skills and practicing them while others might be focused on healing childhood wounds or processing difficult events.
While I think it’s important to have an idea of what you could expect in our sessions, my work with everyone looks slightly different. We would tailor this to fit your goals in our first few sessions. Here’s what our work together could look like:
For the more practical side of things, I tend to start everyone with an exploration of values, meaning that we will figure out what is uniquely important to you and only you. This gives us our compass in the work we do together helping guide future decisions and goals. We might then begin learning and challenging the unhelpful thoughts and behavior patterns that accompany things like depression, anxiety, relationship issues, or general dissatisfaction. We need to know and understand the causes of these and what we’re up against if we want to make lasting changes. We might then focus on learning about how to regulate our nervous systems, often through the breath and mindfulness, so that we can begin to relieve our bodies of that stress we’ve been holding onto.
Once we have a good grasp on those internal experiences (patterns, thoughts, emotions, and beliefs) and begin to implement some of these skills, we would then work to go deeper - to help heal what caused these patterns in the first place. We’d use a mix of parts work (IFS) or Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) to heal these wounded parts and build a different relationship with ourselves. This might sound scary at first, and it’s perfectly normal to feel some discomfort here. As a great therapist once told me, “We are looking for a bee sting level of discomfort, not a broken bone!” You’re in the driver’s seat here, and we will only do the work that you feel ready to do.
Many of my clients have tried therapy before but want to go deeper. Some of them are challenging old belief systems or ideals that no longer serve them and want to live a life that aligns more with their values. A lot of them are wanting to work through long-held wounds and trauma that continues to show up for them in their relationship with themselves and others.
If you resonate with my approach or simply have more questions, I am here to help. I tell everyone in my initial consultations that helping people find the right therapist is the most important thing to me – even if that isn’t me! I offer twenty-minute consultations at no cost to see if we might be a good fit. I look forward to connecting with you and learning more about your story!
